CHATEAU CISSAC – Cru Bourgois Haut Medoc 2004 75cl Bottle – Just What the Doctor Ordered
The return to more conventional weather during 2004 saw also a return to a more classic style, this of course was seen generally across Bordeaux and not just in Cissac. Chateau Cissac 2004 exhibits a full purple red colour, fresh ripe dark fruit nose with hints of vanilla and tobacco, in the mouth there is a nice viscosity, autumnal fruits with fresh clean tannins, culminating in a typical Chateau Cissac elegant finish. Hand picked grapes. Vinification in oak vats under temperature control up to a maximum of 28/30 degrees c. The wine is matured 18 months in barrels which 30 to 40% are new. In 1895, Jacques Mondon, a lawyer in Pauillac, acquired several vineyards in the parish of Cissac-Medoc. He combined these different vineyards under the name of Chateau Cissac. In 1940, Louis Vialard inherited the property from his grand-parents Mondon and he set about the task of restoring the vineyards and the out-buildings as well as the family home. The Chateau is of a particular architectural style, a 'chartreuse' of the 18th century and is probably on the site of a roman villa.

As from the 2002 vintage Roda II was renamed Roda. Once the 17 wines coming from the 17 vineyards selected for the year have been aged one year in barrel, it is the time for Roda and Roda I to be created. In the blending of Roda, the wines are from plots of red berry fruit characters, with aromas that are to the fore, ready for immediate enjoyment, with sweet spice notes and delicious freshness. On the palate, the red berry fruit should come through, with a refreshing mouthfeel, length, silky texture and continuous volume. They are excellent wines for gastronomic meals, very versatile, go well with fish, roast meat or a complex casserole dish.

Cirsion has a deep, blackish purple colour, its aromas unravel in successive waves of very black fruit, damp earth, violets, chocolate and mint, eucalyptus, smoke. On the palate, it has huge volume combining in astonishing manner great structure with wonderful smoothness. Layers and layers of aromas and flavours which linger in the mouth, caressing it before developing into a finish that stays in the mouth and returns to the nose. It is advisable to decant the wine several hours before serving, especially the younger vintages.

Deeply coloured, medium bodied blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, matured in French oak barrels for fourteen months. The Mill Race at Vergelegen was constructed during the tenure of Governor Adriaan van der Stel 1700 – 1708 to divert water from the Lourens river to the mill wheel. During archaeological excavations the granite base and sides were uncovered, adding further to the growing knowledge of the history and tradition of Vergelegen.
